Clay masks war

Hey. I’ve always been huge fan of beauty products and puting a mask on my face counts as getting-my-life-together moment for me. Over time I’ve tried bunch of  different masks and I’m always on a search for best one yet.

In my online search for best facial mask I came across this Aztec Secret Indian Healing clay from amazon. It had great reviews,  I especially enjoyed buzzfeed video where different skin type people tried this mask for several days and recorded its result and personal observations. Link to that video HERE.

It sells out on amazon for just 9.16$ – which would be great if I was not from middle Europe and shipping here would cost me even more than the clay itself. So I got to search for another site that would be more Europe friendly and I found one and omg how glad I am I did.

Let me introduce to you this cool store called iHerb. iHerb is full of many many many beauty products, health supplements, nutrition supplements, vegan products, baby products, herbs, personal care, bath bombs, eco-friendly products, sport supplements and many other categories. It was like a dream to find so many interesting categories and for that price ! What appeals to me the most is the possibility to shop in czech currency as well, shipping is just a few dollars and so many different discounts – I got first order 10% discount.

iHerb offered the famous Aztec Secret Indian healing clay for 7.95$ (less than amazon) and ships to Czech Republic for much less so I ordered it.

My package arrived in 2 days (I was shocked) and it was packed in this small cartoon box taped with iHerb printed tape. Looked so cute and I can’t believe I forgot to take a photo.

But I did take a photo of the clay. It came neatly packed so no mess got out of the container.

I got myself 1 lb (454 g) of the clay – they offer bigger size for even better price but since I didn’t know how my skin would react I didn’t want to order too much. Description and instruction were written on the outside of the container in english and you can read them here:

The powder itself was odorless (or at least I couldn’t smell anything) and it’s substance was so nice I wanted to stick my hand into it. Felt so good and soft.

Instruction clearly states to mix the clay with wather/ or apple cider vinegar in non-metal bowl with non-metal utensils. As I read the reviews and all of them were recommending vinegar instead the water for better results I went straight for apple cider vinegar. I didn’t have the usual brand of apple cider vinegar most of the reviewers used since that’s not sold in Czech Republic I used one of our own:img_5786

For my first usage I mixed 2 spoons of clay with 2 spoons of vinegar, mixed it in the bowl with plastic spoon. Once I added vinegar the mass started to bubble and fizzle but it stopped once it was properly mixed into past form. For the application I used the same spoon I used for mixing.

Let’s talk about my skin. Even thought I hit puberty long time ago I still suffer from acne and acne scars. Main reason for it is my hormonal imbalance and gynecological problems, my never-ending battle with depression and anxiety that left me with so many acne scars. Every time I would get anxious I would involuntarily scratch myself, I would scrape on every scrub I had so it could never properly heal,I would even scratch myself bloody without even thinking about the consequences it would leave on my skin. It used to be worst in the night-time as I would scratch myself in my sleep a lot and woke up with dried blood all over my face, upper arms and back. This left me with bunch of scars I’ve been trying to ease for years now.I  explained more about my mental health problems in this article.

I never posted my make up free face on the internet as I’m still bit self-conscious about my appearance but trying so hard to love every part of me  (check out my Road to self-love is a mess ) even my problematic skin so here are my before photographs:

I removed my make up, washed my face with wather and applied the clay mask in thick layer all over my face except for the mouth and eyes areas.

Instruction says to leave it on for 20 minutes max but I left it on for like one episode of f.r.i.e.n.d.s. so it was more than 220 minutes.  By the end as the mask was drying off I could feel pulling sensation, and a definite pulsating of skin as the description promised “feel your face pulsate”. It was kind of strange but not bad – I was expecting it to pulsate all of the time as it was on but it was just few pulses every once in a while really. Dried mask doesn’t allow much facial expressions just as many other masks so talking with the clay on was very funny.

I removed the mask with luke warm water, just a small amount since I made very thick mask this time so it was sort of falling off in this big clay piles and dissolving in a water. Removing took several minutes cuz even though I was wearing headband I still managed to get some on my hair.

Container label warns that the skin might be irritated and red right after the use and it would go back to normal after 30 minutes and all of that was true.

When I washed it off my face felt so smooth and cleaned like never before. It didn’t feel dry as I was expecting it to be. My skin was reddish but it was no more oily and I might be just projecting it but I felt like it looked much better after just one use. Here are the photo evidence

I decided to put it on everyday and see what would happen in a weak. Next day I added little more vinegar than the clay so my mixture was much smother and easier to apply. There were also more of it so I put it on my arms as well.

Cleaned it of, dried it off and repeated the steps next day. After 5 days I noticed huge improvement of my skin just look:

By the 7 day of everyday usage the difference was very flattering.

BUT! Even thought this clay do do miracle after continuous usage it started to dry my skin way too much. After 8-9 day the skin around my mouth would be so dry it started to scruff and it actually hurt to put on moisturizer on to try to hydrate the dried part so I postponed it’s usage to 2-3 times a week depending on how my work schedule looked like at that time.  ( I believe once a week would be just perfect regular usage)

Label states 1lb should be enough for 10 masks but in reality you can make much more of it. I’ve been using it for a month and a half now and I still have enough for like 3-4 masks.

Final results of before/after photos :

So in conclusion Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay from iHerb is incredible, works just like it promises but you can’t use it too often, great price for the amount you’re buying and truly words most powerful clay mask.

BUT another BUT.

There was this other Indian Healing Clay mask that states exact same things as the Aztec mask. So which one is truly word’s most powerful facial? I decided to compare this two.

I got Indian healing clay by Melao company form AliExpress for 13.35$ for one pound of the mask. As it’s aliexpress there is no surprise that the shipping took one whole month and I even had to go to pick it up at local post office since it wasn’t delivered directly to my home.

First CON of this mask was the packing as it was badly closed so the clay was all over the bag.

Both clays claim to be 100% Natural calcium Bentonite Clay but they differ in colour, smell and structure. This green container clay had also green color clay that smelled kind of like a dirt and  the structure was bit more moist than the Aztec one.

Description and instruction are pretty much the same:

I mixed equal part of clay with apple cider vinegar and it did not fizz like Aztec one. I created this green paste and applied it to my clean face with plastic spoon just like the other one. I looked like shrek – huge difference between color of both of the clays.9b63c169-d118-44d6-a6c6-585990cf8906

After few seconds it was on my face I noticed strong burning sensation in my eyes. I couldn’t keep them open cuz the vapors from the mask were irritating my eyes so much it kept watering and hurting. I didn’t feel the mask drying at all but I kept it on for like 5 minutes and I had my eyes closed shut the whole time but in the end I just couldn’t take it anymore I had to wash it off. But it didn’t come off that easily – my eyes were no longer hurting once I washed it off but my face had green tone from the green clay. Just like this:

I had to use lush soap bar and scrub my face with it several times until it came off. My face felt kind of rough afterwards – don’t know if it as from the clay or all of the scrubbing to get the mask off.

I never used this mask ever again and I regret buying it. This wasn’t even fair clay war as from my experiences I have one definite 100% winner – Aztec indian healing clay and one sore looser I can’t be even bother to mention again and put direct link to shopping site as I truly believe no one should buy this.

iHerb offers the best price for the best clay mask out there. 100% recommendation.

  1. I’ve been using the Aztec clay for about 5 years with ACV and I LOVE the stuff! It’s such a shame it costs so much to get it to you though. I can’t believe the other green clay hurt your eyes so bad and left you with that green colour! Aztec is definitely the winner. Great post 🙂 x
